Animated Short Film / Scream For Ice

The Sun shines, ice melts
A polar bear on its own
A child cries out ah!
The haiku poem you read above is the core of the short animation film that we took part in, "Scream For Ice". And the narrative form of "Scream For Ice" is based on the traditional Japanese art of poetry, Haiku.

Scream For Ice has won 10 awards, 6 honorable mentions, and has been chosen for 76 official selections at film festivals all around the world.

Scream for Ice merges two key elements: traditional Japanese Haiku poetry and the theme of nature-human conflict. The film seeks to pioneer a novel narrative form at the crossroads of cinema and poetry. Inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky's poetic cinema, particularly his integration of poetry elements, the filmmaker primarily drew from Haiku in crafting the film's narrative style. This involved a meticulous adaptation of Haiku's rules and features into cinematic storytelling, exploring aspects such as directorial approach, structure, character, and the use of visual and auditory elements to serve the narrative.

The film also delves into the pressing issue of nature versus humanity, urging viewers to contemplate individual responsibility alongside governmental and corporate actions regarding climate change. Through its animation techniques—cel, 2D, and 3D—the film offers a surrealistic lens to highlight often overlooked aspects of reality, aligning with its thematic exploration.
